Abstract The present investigation on “Development of cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne (Fab.) (Anobiidae: Coleoptera) on stored turmeric as influenced by enriched carbon dioxide (CO2)†was conducted at Post Harvest Technology Center, Bapatla, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh during 2014-15. Storage houses of turmeric rhizomes at a processing mill and Agricultural Market Committee yard were regularly surveyed and the samples were observed for the incidence of cigarette beetle. The activity of cigarette beetle was also monitored using pheromone traps. Detailed biology of the insect on turmeric and the effect of CO2 on its development and on curcumin content (%) in turmeric stored under modified atmospheres were studied. Emergence of cigarette beetle adults from the samples indicated its incidence in stored turmeric which caused weight loss to an extent of 15.71 and 14.82 per cent in processing mill and AMC yard respectively, in 180 days. Pheromone trap catches of male cigarette beetles at different locations revealed more or less similar pattern of temporal distribution indicating that they are effective tools for monitoring cigarette beetle. The eggs when freshly laid were translucent, smooth and shining, which later became pearly white in colour. The insect completed four larval instars before pupation. The larvae made galleries and caused damage by tunneling into the rhizomes. The larvae pupate within a cell made from food and waste material. The adults were small, oval, stout and reddish-brown beetles. The studies on the biology indicated that the mean developmental periods for egg, larva and pupa of L. serricorne were 5.4 d, 26.26 d and 5.67 d, respectively on turmeric at ambient laboratory conditions during the summer. The highest per cent mortality of cigarette beetles was recorded in Magik bag and polypropylene bag containing 80% CO2 (76.67), followed by Super bag (66.67) at 7 DAT. The Super bag, Magik bag and polypropylene bag with 80% CO2 were found effective for storage of turmeric as the progeny development of cigarette beetle was minimum (1.67, 2.33 and 3.0 mean no. of adults, respectively) compared to the other treatments and also higher curcumin contents (6.23, 5.96 and 5.89%, respectively) were maintained in turmeric even after 160 days of storage.
