Abstract Okra is an important vegetable crop grown in India. Root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita is widely distributed in India and causes severe damage to okra. Various nematicides which have so far been used to control root-knot nematode are not only expensive and cumbursome to apply, but also hazardous to human beings and the environment. In view to reduce dependence on nematicides, alternative methods which are eco-friendly and feasible to the growers are being sought. Efficacy of oil cakes of neem (Azadirachta indica), mustard (Brassica campestris) and castor (Ricinus communis) was evaluated against root-knot nematode M. incognita. Results showed that soil application with neem and mustard cakes @ 5 q/ha was the best treatments to improve plant growth characters and reduce nematode reproduction on okra. Results also showed that seed dressing with neem cake @ 20 per cent (w/w) found best treatment to improve plant growth characters and reduced nematode reproduction on okra. In another experiment, it was found that seed soaked with aqueous extract of neem cake @ 20 per cent (w/v) for 12 hours reduced the nematode reproduction and improved plant growth characters significantly. In case of combined effect of cakes as soil application + seed dressing studies showed that the neem cake @ 4 q/ha as soil application + 15 percent (w/w) as seed dressing was the best treatment to improve plant growth characters of okra and to reduce nematode reproduction. Likewise combined effect of oil cakes as soil application + seed soaking revealed that neem cake @ 4 q/ha as soil application and 15% (w/v) aqueous extract as seed soaking, reduced the nematode reproduction and increased the plant growth characters significantly.
