Abstract The present investigation entitled, “Evaluation of some ber (Zizyphus mauritiana Lamk.) genotypes for morphological and physico-chemical characters†was carried out at Instructional-cumResearch Orchard of Arid Zone Fruit Project, Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri during the year 2012 to 2014. The study of nineteen different genotypes of ber was done which were grafted on the local rootstock. Among the 19 genotypes of ber, genotype Jalgaon was recorded maximum tree height (5.50m) and tree spread (29.16 m2). Six genotypes were having upright growth habit, four genotypes were having intermediate growth habit while nine were having spreading habit. Overall dense foliage was observed in all genotypes except CIAH Selection-1 and Kopargaon Selection. The high branch thorniness was observed in most of the genotypes except Kadaka, Kala Gola, Kopargaon Selection, Chhuhara and Goma Kirti. The curved and alternate curved shape thorns were observed for all the genotypes. Not much variation was observed in respect of leaf shape, leaf apex and leaf margin. The maximum flower intensity of shoot was found in middle to upper part of shoot in most of the genotypes (nine) and in four genotypes it was observed scattered from basal to upper part of shoots. In two genotypes CIAH Hybrid-1 and Kala Gola the intensity was found maximum in the middle part. The maximum number of fruits per cluster (6-8) was registered by Kadaka followed by Kala Gola (5-6) and it was observed minimum in remaining genotypes (2-4). The early fruit maturity was observed in genotypes Chhuhara, Umran and Kala Gola While it was late in Kopargaon Selection Mehrun-1, Jalgaon and Rahuri 1, 2 and 3. Much variation in respect of fruit shape and colour was observed in all the genotypes. The highest fruit weight (71.71g) was recorded by genotype Kopargaon Selection while it was found minimum in Rahuri-3 (6.49g). The largest fruit size was registered by Kopargaon selection. The maximum pulp weight was noticed in genotype Kopargaon Selection (68.71g) and it was found lowest in Rahuri-3 (5.47g) Not much variation was observed in stone characters of different genotypes however significantly maximum stone weight was recorded by genotype Umran (23.10). While it was found lowest in genotype CIAH Selection-1. (4.22).
