Abstract Field trial was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications to study the genetic behaviour of rice mutants derived from Kalakeri, a traditional upland cultivar. The material comprised nine parental varieties and their eight crosses in F 2 generation. Observations were recorded on 15 quanti tative characters and data were analysed statistically to get information on magnitude of variation and nature of inheritance of the characters. Significance of differences among F 2 s was tested following Bahl et al. (1968) and breeding potential of crosses was assessed in F 2 generation.
