Abstract This paper provides a brief introduction to the EXOS D satellite which was launched in February 1989, and which has been given the name Akebono. This craft was put in a semipolar orbit, and has as its main object the study of the magnetosphere and polar ionosphere, and to shed light on the acceleration processes of auroral electrons and the general dynamics of plasma in the polar ionosphere. This issue contains a number of articles derived from work from this satellite.
