Abstract Eleven years ago, Microsoft heralded the launch of Windows 95 with great media fanfare, famously backed by the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up." Five years ago, Microsoft unleashed Windows XP, feted with a \$250 million marketing campaign. Eighteen months ago, Microsoft unveiled an estimated \$200 million campaign to promote…Windows XP, again. Because by 2005, its planned successor, now known as Windows Vista, was nowhere to be found---and already six months late.
