Abstract Basing teachers' raises, salary grade, bonuses, or commissions on their performance, or that of their students, is a topic that sparks energetic debate. Many argue merit pay has a long history of working in the private sector and there is no reason not to use similar metrics to pay for what you want in education. Those opposed say there is no clear-cut way to determine whether a teacher is performing well. But would offering teachers a bonus in the pay packet make for better student scores on these tests?
