Abstract When my husband and I married, we sorted through CDs and albums lovingly collected since childhood and divested ourselves of any doubles. The end result? A vast music collection that exceeded our individual means without additional investment and which generated a bit of a windfall as we sold off the items that were redundant.Despite the potential gains, though, the merger didn't go off without a hitch. We grappled with the weighty issues---like whose copy of Dylan's Biograph or Modern English's After the Snow we would keep (extremely important if the union doesn't work out); whether CDs trumped vinyl; and whose maintenance standards should be adopted (I try to put CDs back in their jewel cases, my husband would use them for coasters if I let him).
