Abstract Since Internet commerce began in earnest nearly ten years ago, people have talked about the need for systems that allow small payments for digital content. Many systems for such payments---often called "micropayments"---have been devised, and many companies have tried to bring them to market. To date, none have succeeded, but every couple of years a new round of companies try again. Is it likely that one or more will make it in the future?
