Abstract Ani DiFranco is a singer/songwriter from Buffalo, New York who has built a very successful independent music career. DiFranco's personal style and lyrical messages resonated in particular with lesbian audiences, who became a strong component of her fan base. But DiFranco didn't claim the same label for herself and when, in 1996, she released an album about a heterosexual relationship and in 1998 married the man she had sung about, a vocal group of her fans were none too pleased. They felt hurt and betrayed---something that many of Google's current detractors can probably relate to. Google, it turns out, is not a lesbian either.
