Abstract E-learning standards and specifications display common patterns in the ways they support various aspects of educational and meta-educational activities and processes. This article considers the nature of these design patterns, and it suggests how (once identified) they can enable better educational technology designs, and how they can be analyzed to better understand the philosophy and practice of contemporary technology-mediated education.
