Abstract We have measured proton and deuteron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetries {ital A}{sup {ital p}}{sub 2} and {ital A}{sup {ital d}}{sub 2} and structure functions {ital g}{sup {ital p}}{sub 2} and {ital g}{sup {ital d}}{sub 2} over the range 0.03{lt}{ital x}{lt}0.8 and 1.3{lt}{ital Q}{sup 2}{lt}10 (GeV/{ital c}){sup 2} by inelastically scattering polarized electrons off polarized ammonia targets. Results for {ital A}{sub 2} are significantly smaller than the positivity limit {radical}{ital R} for both targets. Within experimental precision the {ital g}{sub 2} data are well described by the twist-2 contribution, {ital g}{sub 2}{sup WW}. Twist-3 matrix elements have been extracted and are compared to theoretical predictions. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
