Abstract The nuclear potential between two nucleons with nonrelativistic velocities in their center-of-mass system is calculated by using the relativistic pion theory and taking fully into account the effect of the nucleon recoil. The resulting potential completely disagrees with the Klein potential but differs from the Levy potentisl to a lesser extent. It is shown that an expansion of the contribution of the nucleon recoil in powers of the ratio of the pion and nucleon masses leads to erroneous results. (auth)
