Abstract The spontaneously generated magnetic flux observed by Mannhart {ital et} {ital al}. in asymmetric 45{degree} grain boundaries in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} was explained by them in terms of a {ital d}{sub {ital x}{sup 2}{minus}{ital y}{sup 2}} superconducting order parameter and grain boundary faceting. This article argues that twin boundaries which contact the grain boundary also play an important role. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
