Abstract Well-defined beams of the ion molecules LiAr/sup +/, LiKr/sup +/, and RbAr/sup +/ were identified in an electromagnetic isotope separator. The ion beams were produced by running the discharge of the ion source on a mixture of the inert gas and the vapor of the alkali iodide. At a total extracted ion beam intensity of several milliamperes (mainly Li/sup +/ and I/sup +/), microampere beams of the compound ions were produced. (M.C.G.)
