Abstract ADONIS is a complex but user-friendly adaptive optics (AO) instrument for the European Southern Observatory 3.6-m telescope. ADONIS is composed of several inter-acting parts, including the astronomer. Multiple parameters influence the system performance and they are difficult to handle by the astronomer. A multi-agent, distributed, and message oriented control system is designed. The communication architecture is described. 1 INTRODUCTION The ADONIS instrument[2, 10] is based on the adaptive optics prototype system called Come-On-Plus[18, 19], previously based on the Come-On[16, 17] prototype system. Adaptive Optics is a technique that we use in Adonis for correction of atmospheric turbulence. When applied to large telescopes, the results yield astronomical images of far greater quality.
