Abstract The concept of network and system management includes tasks such as controlling, planning, allocating, deploying, co-ordinating, and monitoring the available resources. Nowadays the frameworks and platforms on the market provide hundreds of tools to ease these tasks, but the main skills required to deal with management problems are only acquired by a long experience in the field, which makes these activities remain hard to perform. The conceptual modelling of all this expertise together with some artificial intelligence techniques can expand the capabilities of management tools, providing not only measurements but also conclusions on the recollected data. This paper presents the work aimed at integrating a model based diagnostic tool, designed and implemented at HP Laboratories in Bristol, with one of the best-known platforms in network management (Network Node Manager for Windows NT).
