Abstract Verbs of movement are used to describe motions, both literally, where there actually is a motion as in She ran across the garden, and figuratively, where there is no motion or change, neither spatially nor temporally, as in The huts ran between the ranch and the frontage. This study tried to investigate whether it is likely for the native Persian speaking participants to structure different conceptualizations to semantically similar Persian sentences describing a static spatial scene which are different with respect to the fictiveness of their verbs. Thirty-six male and female Iranian university students of different majors agreed to participate in the study. Twenty-five experimental sentence-pairs were selected from a pool of constructed sentences using the acceptability judgment task. In a norming study, semantic convergence of the two sentences of every pair was examined. Ten filler pairs were also constructed. Each participant was given only one of the sentences in a sentence-pair and was asked to represent the underlined subject of the sentence in an arrow-drawing task. The depicted arrows were then rated on a scale on how they compared to other arrows drawn by the same individual. The mean length ratings for the fictive motion vs. non-fictive motion sentences were then compared, using a paired t-test. The results suggest that the conceptualization of fictive motion sentences is different from the conceptualization of sentences with a non-fictive verb. It could be argued that the conceptual simulation made the participants elongate the depiction of fictive motion sentences in relation to the non-fictive motion sentences. The conclusions are further discussed in the study. 1
