Abstract A method for flow control of curved air ducts using mechanical vortex generators (VG) is described. This method includes the creation of vortex generators in a reference flow using the notion of topological derivative. A classical procedure of parametric optimization of the created VG by an adjoint state approach is also presented. Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed illustrating the control of an s-shaped duct by VG.
