Abstract A curriculum is only one component of the educational process. Alone, it cannot assure competence of the students it was designed for. The goal of this curriculum is to be an integral part of an educational system that produces a competent entry level EMT-Critical Care Technician. For the purpose of this course guide, competence is defined relative to the Description of the Profession. Description of the Profession The first step in the design phase of the curriculum development process was to define the profession in terms of the general competencies and expectations of the EMT-Critical Care technician. The Description of the Profession was drafted and subsequently underwent extensive community and peer review. It was designed to be practical, visionary and dynamic as to not limit the growth and evolution of the profession. Ultimately it served as the guiding document for the curriculum development project. The Description of the Profession also provided the philosophical justification of the depth and breadth of coverage of material. The Description of the Profession for the EMT-Critical Care Technician is attached. (Appendix A)
