Description whose appreciation of American men of letters has been my inspiration, this thesis is affectionately inscribed.* PREFACE In this thesis I attempt a brief survey of the evolution of the textbook in the history of American literature * together with a comparative study of the textbooks now in use * particularly those for secondary schools * Chapter 111 * in which I give a brief review of the best histories of American literature * pointing out those most satisfactory both for class use and for reference * will * I tiust * be of some practical value to the high school teacher* My opinions are based upon thirteen years of experience in teaching English in high school and college * upon responses to questionalres sent to high school teachers * college professors * and writers of textbooks in every state in the Union * and upon an actual examination of some forty textbooks in American literature.
