Abstract Cloud detection using satellite measurements presents a big challenge near the terminator where the visible (VIS; 0.65 µm) channel becomes less reliable and the reflected solar component of the solar infrared 3.9-µm channel reaches very low signal-to-noise ratio levels. As a result, clouds are underestimated near the terminator and at night over land and ocean in previous Atmospheric Radiation
