Abstract This paper looks at an excitation mechanism for lower hybrid drift instability near the neutral plane of the current sheet in the magnetotail. The authors show a significant decrease in stability as drift-free conditions are lost. They argue that as convection rises within the magnetosphere, that a threshold condition is exceeded with allows the excitation of the lower hybrid drift instability.
